Although we mentioned the rumours behind the 7D a week or two back, one thing is for sure, and that’s the new Canon EOS 50D. It features:

• 15.1 megapixel APS-C sized CMOS sensor
• DIGIC 4 image processor
• up to ISO 12800 support
• 3.0-inch LCD with face detection
• Live View
• HDMI output

This should, in time, replace the current Canon EOS 40D. It should be on sale at the end of this month (September), with an RRP of £1120 (Body Only), and £1500 with the 17-85 EF-S IS lens.

Started over a year ago, the rumours of a full frame Canon EOS 7D to replace the current Canon EOS 5D. With the large Photokina trade show only a month away, it’s likely Canon will launch something there, and the EOS 7D may well be that camera. Now the general consensus is that the picture above (courtesy of Engadget) is a fake, but that doesn’t stop the fact the 5D is getting a little “old” now, and a replacement is likely.
Of course, if you can’t afford an expensive full frame DSLR, there’s always the Canon EOS 450D we featured yesterday with the £50 cashback offer.

The Canon EOS 450d is one of Canon’s newest Digital SLRs, and Canon are currently offering £50 cashback on this camera. However, Canon have recently extended the cashback offer until the 30th September 2008, so there is still time to buy one and get an even better price for it. Canon have released a new digital SLR, the EOS 1000D. The specification includes:

• 10.1 Megapixel CMOS sensor
• EOS Integrated Cleaning System
• 7-point wide-area AF system with f/5.6 cross-type centre point
• Up to 3 frames per second
• 2.5” LCD with Live View shooting
• DIGIC III image processor
• Compatible with SD and SDHC memory cards
• Compact and lightweight body
• Digital Photo Professional RAW processing software
• Fully compatible with all Canon EF and EF-S lenses and EX-series Speedlites

The camera can shoot upto 3fps (JPEG), but more importantly, it can continue at that rate until the memory card is full; no stopping after the buffer is full for the 1000D. The move to SD cards will be welcomed by many, as they are becoming much more common (and smaller than Canon’s previous choice of CF cards), however, existing Canon digital users may be a little upset by Canon’s continued move away from CF cards.

This camera should be available in July 2008 in the UK.

One interesting extra feature of the D60 has now been announced - it is compatible with the Eye-Fi SD card, and adjusts it’s power settings when the SD card is inserted (to allow extra time for those large files to be copied over the Wi-Fi link). The Eye-Fi SD card is a 2Gb memory card that also has Wi-Fi, and, once setup, will copy each image either to your PC running their dedicated software, or to one of various online sites (such as Flickr, Picasa Web, Faceboook). As part of this announcement, Eye-Fi will also expand their support to cover Nikon’s “myPicturetown”.

Hot on the heels of Canon’s 450D announcement, Nikon have announced their D60. This is a 10.2 megapixel DSLR, and features Nikon’s new dual dust removal countermeasures, a 0.18 second startup time and a “split second” shutter response time, 2.5″ screen (no Live View though). In the US, this will ship with the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-55mm f/3.5-5.6G VR (Image Stabilising) lens, and will be available in February (no price yet though). Details of UK pricing and availability are not yet available.

Canon have today announced a new DSLR, the 450D. This is a 12.2 megapixel camera, with a 3″ LCD screen (with Live View), a new 9 point AF (AutoFocus) systems, the DIGIC III processor, and the EOS Integrated Sensor Cleaning Solution. For a consumer DSLR, this is the first Canon to move from Compact Flash to SD / SDHC cards. Canon have used this new space to also change the battery format, and now include a larger capacity battery. Price is expected to be £600 (Body only) and £680 with the 18-55 Kit Lens.
