Met Police release photography advice

If you are a photographer, you may want to read this article, from London’s Metropolitan Police, which lays out their advice on photography, and what should and shouldn’t happen if you are stopped for taking pictures in the street; for example, there is no mention of the ability of a police officer to request the deletion of pictures you have taken (and that’s because, in most circumstances, they don’t have that authority); however, it does mention that the police can seize and retain your equipment, whether that’s a camera or your smartphone.

We should point out that away from public streets, you may well be on private ground (eg inside shopping centres) where different rules and regulations may apply, and the general right to take a photo in the first place may not exist.  We’re not lawyers, and we’re not going to try and interpret the law here, but at least this article gives the Met Police’s opinion on what’s likely to happen…
