Elonex have partnered with bookshop Borders to release this 6″ eBook reader. It lets you carry “up to 8000 eBooks*, pictures and files” with you, wherever you go. At “9mm thick and only 180g it’s incredibly thin and light, and the long battery life means you can enjoy up to 8000 pages between charges- that’s equivalent to about 3 months reading for the average reader.” [*with optional eBook Accessory Pack]
Elonex have also said “The Elonex eBook uses innovative e-Ink® technology in the screen which is as thick as a credit card. Each page is electronically printed on the screen, which is non-flicker and non-glare so reading is gentle on the eye, even in direct sunlight!
The great thing about the Elonex eBook is that because the pages aren’t printed the eBook has the unique function in that you can change the font size! If you have problems with your sight you can change between 8 different font sizes until the text becomes clearer. You can also rotate the eBook into horizontal format if you find it easier to read longer line lengths.
There is nothing more straightforward to use than a hardback or paperback and the Elonex eBook has been designed to mimic that and be incredibly simple to use. The user interface is incredibly straightforward, the number of buttons has been kept to a minimum and turning a page is as simple as a press of a button.”
The Elonex eBook will be preinstalled with 100 Classic books, and will have access to allow the user to purchase from Borders’ 45,000 online eBooks. The eBook reader will sell for £189 (complete with mains charger and data cable) with the Optional eBook Accessory Pack costing £29 and featuring both a 4GB expansion card and a leather case. It’s not yet available, but should be available “soon”.
Our only problem with all of this? We looked up a book which featured on the Borders eBook main page; a £14.99 eBook; except it cost £11.99 in Hardback and only £5.24 in Paperback; that’s a lot of extra cost just for the benefit of not needing to carry the weight of the paper around, although many eBooks are better priced.
