Asus Eee now with GPS and Touchscreen

Friday, March 28th, 2008

Asus Eee

It appears the new 8.9″ Asus Eee PC may also be coming with a couple of additional goodies. Rumours are that it will come with a touchscreen. We mentioned the touchscreen before, and equally have discussed Asus’ statement saying they weren’t planning it. However, fresh rumours are saying it is likely, and the inclusion of GPS too is interesting. Whether any GPS / mapping software will also ship with the laptop is unknown, nor is it known if this new unit will also have Bluetooth, probably one of the other major hardware omissions so far in the range.

More news as and when we have it confirmed.

Goosync adds Tasks Syncing

Thursday, March 27th, 2008

Goosync

Goosync have added support for Tasks, on top of Contacts and the original Calendar functionality. In the same way as Contacts, the functionality is to sync from your SyncML device to the Goosync server only, as there is no API to allow them to directly sync your Tasks to the Google servers. However, it still allows Goosync to act as a Backup facility for your main data.

Mobile technologies summary

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Adobe Flash Lite

In the last few weeks, there have been all sorts of agreements over various technologies on mobile devices, so we thought we would summarise them all…

  • Adobe has announced it will be producing a Flash player for the iPhone, despite Steve Jobs not being happy with it (claiming Flash Lite was too light, and normal Flash was too “bloaty” for the iPhone)
  • Nokia has announced the new Microsoft Silverlight technology will become available on Nokia Symbian S60 devices, traditional S40 devices, and their range of Internet Tablets.
  • Microsoft has signed a deal with Adobe to bring Flash Lite to Windows Mobile devices, which will be used within the Internet Explorer Mobile browser. The deal also includes Adobe Reader LE for reading PDF documents.

It’s nice to see the main competitors supporting each other’s technology, and not limiting us users, and ensuring each technology has a future irrespective of your chosen mobile device.

JoikuSpot updated

Wednesday, March 26th, 2008

Joikusoft

Early this year we covered the first release of JoikuSoft, which allows your Symbian phone to act as a WiFi Access Point, allowing other devices to share the phone’s internet connection. Well, it’s been updated to v1.1 which includes a number of bug fixes, stability improvements, and the ability to change the name of the access point (although only in the format JoikuSpot_xxx).

However, within the next month or so, we should see a further update which adds WEP support into the software. Although WEP isn’t the latest greatest standard, it should be sufficient for a short term connection between your devices and your phone, and adds an important level of security to the current version.

Currently, HTTP and HTTPS should work (although HTTPS needs some configuring on the clients), but protocols like IMAP and FTP do not currently work, although the authors claim they will have a solution for those for the final release.

We’ll keep an eye on this software, and let you know how things progress.

Asus believe XP will outsell Linux

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

Asus Eee running Windows XP

Asus have stated that they believe the XP version of the Eee PC will outsell the current Linux version by 1.5 times, despite costing roughly twice as much. We’re not so sure, at that price (at least in the UK), they are competing against a whole range of conventional laptops which offer better screens (and higher screen resolution); it seems to us that one of the main driving factors of why they are selling is the price. No news on when the Windows XP version of the current device is due in the UK.

TomTom release new software

Wednesday, March 19th, 2008

TomTom Logo

TomTom have updated their software for the 520, 720 and 920 models, with the new version being v7.480. Along with a few bug fixes, it adds support for the new HD Traffic receiver addon. There are reports of some problems with voice recognition no longer working, but these problems seem to stem from an accidental beta release in the US only, and should not affect users who download the update after yesterday. Some items (custom voice, custom cursor) will need resetting, and it’s best to take a backup of the unit before applying the update.

Satmap update their GPS unit

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

SatMap Active 10

The UK SatMap Active 10 GPS device, which offers a whole range of OS maps (at additional charge) has just received a fairly major software update. The new version, v1.15 features the following updates:

  • A blue ‘You Are Here’ dot to distinguish current location from the red track dots.
  • The ability to hide inactive routes to avoid ‘clutter’ on a map. (Main Menu > Settings > Routes Control)
  • A battery meter that gives a more accurate indication of the power remaining, and an indication of when the unit is connected to an external power source.
  • A more accurate record of the trip data.
  • The ability to download the raw track data from the Active 10 onto a PC (via SatSYNC).
  • The ability to display elevation data derived from the GPS system as opposed to from an in built height data set. (Main Menu > Settings > GPS Settings)
  • The ability to calibrate the compass from the compass page.
  • A low power mode that automatically sets up the unit up to maximise the battery life. (Main Menu > Settings > Advanced Power Control)
  • The ability to reset the track and the trip log simultaneously. (Main Menu >Routes Menu > Reset Data)
  • A 15 second screen off option. (Main Menu > Settings > Power Control)

“The new software also has a new power management system that significantly reduces
the overall power consumption of the Active 10, thereby improving battery
performance. It should also improve the GPS acquisition time and upgrade the signal
lock in difficult conditions such as under tree canopies.
The most obvious change is to the start-up operation: when switched on, the Active 10
(with no map card loaded), goes to the GPS status screen first. Yellow blocks appear on
the bar chart whilst the unit is picking up the satellites, which turn orange once they
have acquired the data from each one. Once a sufficient number of satellites have been
acquired, the unit locks on, and then automatically switches to the GPS Map screen.”

About the only thing missing from the SatMap website is information on how to obtain the new software…

Apple Airport Express 802.11n announced

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Apple Airport

As we (and others) predicted, the Apple Airport Express has been released, although it is not currently listed in the Apple UK Store. In the US, the price has remained the same as the elder unit, so we expect to see similar pricing when it does come to the UK.
